CHARGE OF GROSS CRUELTY TO A CHILD.

MRS. CHUNG FONG BEFORE THE COURT.

The Chinese woman, Mrs. Chung Fong, who was arrested on Thursday evening on a charge of ill-using her adopted daughter, Mary Ann Sam Pak, was brought before the City Court yesterday morning.

Dr. Crowther, resident surgeon of the Mel- bourne Hospital, deposed that on Thursday afternoon the little girl was brought to that institution. He examined her, and found there were wounds on her face near the eye- brows and mouth, the body was covered with little scratches, and on the left shoulder there was a mark which appeared like an old burn. The arms were black and blue from bruising, and there was a wound half-an inch long on the top of the head.

Constable Maxwell deposed that he arrested the prisoner, and took the child to the Melbourne Hospital. He had some witnesses who had seen the woman ill-use the child, and asked for a remand to enable him to procure more evidence.

The accused was then remanded for a week, bail being allowed in her own recognisance of £100 and one surety of £100.

The child was sent to the Industrial Schools. Saturday 18 August 1888 The Argus (Melbourne, Vic
