Chung Fong Lays Out His Death Bed

SYDNEY, Sept. 14. Chung Fong, a 67-year old Chinese, of Surry Hills, who whs to have appeared in court tomorrow week, gassed himself at his home early to night. Fong, who has been in Australia since 1900, had never been in trouble until be was charged recently with being in possession of an unlicensed pistol. He spent the last week farewelling all his friends. Then late today, be made his bed. replacing soiled with spotlesslyclean linen and bedcovers, and then dressed himself in his best clothes. After locking the door of his upstairs room he turned on the gas jets and then lay down on his bed. A Chinese living next door, who detected the gas, went into the house, turned off the gas supply at the meter and then called the police. Sgt. Campbell, who broke into the upstairs room, found Fong , dead on his bed. Fong, who was a highly respected member of the Sydney Chinese community, had been employed at the Australian Glass Works until a week ago. ( Police have been told that he made up his mind to commit suicide when a week ago he was charged with the pistol offence.
